If you are looking at a contract in Milwaukee, one number sits behind most of the offers you will see: the federal per diem rate. Agencies use it as a guide for how much of your pay can come as tax-free stipends. The new rates took effect on October 1, so here is where Milwaukee stands and what it means for you.

The fiscal 2026 numbers for Milwaukee

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) sets travel rates for every county each federal fiscal year. Fiscal year 2026 runs from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026.

For Milwaukee, the rates are:

  • Lodging: $140 a night, the same in every month of the year

  • Meals and incidentals: $80 a day

Both numbers are the same as in fiscal 2025. That matches the bigger picture: GSA held this year's rates for the continental United States at last year's levels. The standard rate, which applies in places that do not have their own rate, stays at $110 a night for lodging and $68 a day for meals.

One detail many people miss: on your first and last travel day, the meals rate is 75 percent of the daily amount. For Milwaukee, that works out to $60 on those two days.

What that looks like over a month

For a 30-day month, the maximum works out to roughly:

  • Lodging: $140 × 30 = $4,200

  • Meals and incidentals: $80 × 30 = $2,400

These are ceilings, not promises. Agencies often build their stipends below the maximum, and the split between hourly pay and stipends changes from one offer to the next. When you compare offers, look at the weekly total and at how much of it is the housing stipend. Two offers with the same weekly total can look very different once you see how they are built.

How this fits your stay

The housing stipend is paid to you. You choose where to live and you pay your host directly, so whatever you do not spend on housing stays with you. That is why many travelers look for a furnished place that comes in under the stipend instead of the most expensive place it will cover.

At ReNests, I rent furnished private rooms in Milwaukee to traveling healthcare professionals. Every bedroom has its own keypad lock, there is one adult per room, and you deal with a real, named host from your first message to your last day. Housing that fits your stipend, often little to nothing out of pocket. You can find the listing on Furnished Finder.

The short version

  • Milwaukee's fiscal 2026 per diem is $140 a night for lodging and $80 a day for meals, unchanged from last year.

  • First and last travel days get 75 percent of the meals rate, which is $60.

  • These rates hold from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026.

This post is general information, not tax advice. Whether a stipend is tax-free depends on your own situation, so check with a tax professional who works with travelers before you rely on it.
