Milwaukee Travel Allowance for 2027: $144 Lodging and $80 Meals, Explained

If you are weighing a contract in Milwaukee, one number shapes almost every offer you will see: the federal per diem rate. Agencies use it as a guide for how much of your pay can come as tax-free stipends. Here is what it is for Milwaukee this year, and what it means for you in plain terms.
The 2027 numbers for Milwaukee
The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) sets travel rates for every county each federal fiscal year. Fiscal year 2027 started on October 1, 2026.
For Milwaukee, the 2027 rates are:
Lodging: $144 a night, the same in every month of the year
Meals and incidentals: $80 a day
That is up from $140 a night for lodging in fiscal 2026. The meals rate stayed at $80.
One detail many people miss: on your first and last travel day, the meals rate is 75 percent of the daily amount. For Milwaukee that works out to $60 on those two days.
What that looks like over a month
For a 30-day month, the maximum works out to roughly:
Lodging: $144 × 30 = $4,320
Meals and incidentals: $80 × 30 = $2,400
These are ceilings, not promises. Agencies often build their stipends below the maximum, and the split between hourly pay and stipends varies from one offer to the next. When you compare offers, look at the weekly total and at how much of it is the housing stipend.
Where your housing stipend goes further
The housing stipend is paid to you. You choose where to live and you pay your host directly. Whatever you do not spend on housing stays with you, which is why many travelers look for a furnished place that comes in under the stipend.
For context, average one-bedroom rents in the Milwaukee area have recently been listed at roughly $1,000 to $1,450 a month, depending on the source and the neighborhood. A furnished, all-inclusive room can be simpler still: no utility accounts to open, no furniture to rent, and nothing to set up before your first shift.

A quick word on taxes
Stipends are generally only tax-free when you keep a real tax home and are duplicating expenses while you travel. The rules are specific, so talk with a tax professional who works with travelers, and see IRS Publication 463. We are hosts, not tax advisors, and this post is general information only.
The short version
Milwaukee's 2027 per diem is $144 a night for lodging and $80 a day for meals.
First and last travel days get 75 percent of the meals rate, which is $60.
The stipend is yours to manage. A furnished, all-inclusive room that fits under it means more of your pay stays with you.
