Why Milwaukee for Your Next Contract

When you choose a city for a contract, you are really choosing three things: the work, the pay and the life around it. Two releases this month give Milwaukee a strong case on the first two. Here is what they say.
Healthcare is a bigger share of jobs here
On August 3, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its Milwaukee-area numbers for May 2025. They show healthcare is a larger part of the local workforce than it is nationally.
Healthcare practitioners and technical jobs make up 7.2 percent of employment in the Milwaukee area, compared with 6.3 percent nationally.
Their mean hourly wage in the Milwaukee area is $56.62, compared with $52.26 nationally.
Healthcare support jobs make up 6.0 percent of local employment, with a mean wage of $19.27 an hour.
For a traveler, that is a simple signal: healthcare is a large part of how this area works, and the practitioner jobs here pay above the national mean.
Strong hospitals
The 2026 to 2027 U.S. News & World Report hospital rankings came out this month, and the Milwaukee area did well:
Rankings are not everything, but they do tell you something about the places where you might spend your next 13 weeks.

What it costs to live here
The housing side of a Milwaukee contract is worth a look too. The federal per diem for Milwaukee in fiscal 2026 is $140 a night for lodging and $80 a day for meals, through September 30, 2026. Agencies use that rate as a guide when they build stipends, and the housing stipend is paid to you.
When the stipend is set against that rate, and you find housing that comes in under it, more of your pay stays with you.
The life around the work
Numbers only go so far, and the city around the hospital matters on your days off. Summer brings Summerfest, which ran across three weekends this year, from June 18 to July 4. Winter is real here too. Last season the city's winter parking rules ran from December 1 to March 1, so a contract that runs into the cold months is worth planning with that in mind.
How this fits your stay
If Milwaukee is on your list, start the housing search early so it is not the thing that holds up your start date. At ReNests, I rent furnished private rooms in Milwaukee to traveling healthcare professionals. Every bedroom has its own keypad lock, there is one adult per room, and you deal with a real, named host from your first message on. Housing that fits your stipend, often little to nothing out of pocket. You can find the listing on Furnished Finder.
