Working in Wisconsin on a Compact License

Licensing is one of the first questions a nurse asks about a new state, and one of the most common reasons a start date slips. If you are thinking about a Wisconsin contract this year, here is how the compact works here, and why 2026 is a renewal year for Wisconsin RNs.
Wisconsin is a compact state
Wisconsin is a party to the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). It is written into state law at Wisconsin Statute 441.51.
If your primary state of residence is also a compact state and you hold a multistate license, you can practice in Wisconsin on that license. You do not need to apply for a separate Wisconsin license first.
The compact keeps growing
Connecticut fully implemented the compact on October 1, 2025. That brought the compact to 43 jurisdictions. If you moved your home base recently, it is worth checking where your state stands on the current map.
RN and LPN licenses only
The compact covers RN and LPN licenses. It does not cover advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). An APRN needs a license in each state where they practice. If you work in an advanced practice role, the compact will not carry that part of your practice across state lines, so plan for a separate license in each state before you sign.

2026 is a renewal year for Wisconsin RNs
Wisconsin RN licenses renew on March 1 of every even-numbered year, so 2026 is a renewal year. If you hold a Wisconsin RN license, plan to renew by March 1.
LPN licenses are on a different cycle. They renew on May 1 of odd-numbered years, so this is not an LPN renewal year.
In earlier renewal years, the deadline the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) gave was the last day of February: February 29 in 2024 and February 28 in 2022. Watch for the DSPS notice for this cycle and do not leave it to the last day, especially if you are working a contract with long shifts.
If your multistate license is from another state
If you hold a multistate license issued by another compact state where you live, you do not renew in Wisconsin. Your renewal follows the state that issued your license, not the state where you are working this quarter.
How this fits your stay
Getting the license side settled early leaves your first weeks for the things that matter: learning a new unit and settling into a new city. At ReNests, I rent furnished private rooms in Milwaukee to traveling healthcare professionals. Every bedroom has its own keypad lock, there is one adult per room, and you deal with a real, named host from your first message on. The listing is on Furnished Finder.
This is general information, not licensing advice. Check with Wisconsin DSPS or your own board of nursing about your license and your situation.
